Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Musical influences: Jamaican music from 1961 to 1979 as well as American soul, jazz, and blues. The Skatalites, The Upsetters, Ken Boothe, Desmond Dekker, Alton Ellis, Jackie Mittoo, Supersonics, Johnny Cash, The Clash, and The Specials to name a few. Non-musical influences: The surf community plays a big role in each of our lives. We also try inspire and help each other musically, and non-musically.
Who writes the songs, what are they about?
Colin (singer) writes the majority of the music. He comes up with the basic rhythm and lyrics, and then the rest of the band writes their own parts. The Songs are about all sorts of things; relationships, staying true to your self, working hard, and even politics.
What inspires you to do what you do?
What inspires us most is the love of music. The Big Sound, is made up of close friends. When we're not surfing or making fun of each other, it's always a lot of fun to be together to play music,
How does music affect you and the world around you?
We try to put out a positive vibe out to the world, through our music, weather it be on our CD or at our live shows. If people are grooving out, swinging their hips, or cutting up the dance floor, then we are doing, what we love to do, just right. If someone can relate to our music, and feels what we feel, then we have reached our goal.
What's new in the recording of your music?
We are in the middle of recording our second album. It's a bit more diverse than our first album. We have an original ska tune that we recorded. We didn't play ska on our first album. We will also have original rocksteady, reggae, instrumentals, and a few cover songs. We feel that we have progressed as a band as well.
Tell us about your upcoming shows.
We are playing at The Rob Machado Surf Classic at Cardiff reef on September 25th 2005. We are excited about that, and let's hope Colin wins the contest!
